History and cultural context

Chefchaouen was founded in the late fifteenth century as a fortified Rif settlement during conflict and migration across the western Mediterranean. Andalusian and Jewish families later shaped its urban character, crafts and architecture. The blue-painted lanes are relatively recent, while the kasbah and compact medina preserve the town’s deeper history.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are popular for pleasant walking weather. Winter can be rainy and cool; summer mornings and evenings are calmer.

The Rif is cooler and wetter than southern Morocco. Bring a light waterproof layer outside summer and comfortable shoes for slopes and polished lanes.
