Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen settlement on an old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Its houses, towers, communal spaces and defensive walls illustrate southern Moroccan building traditions; UNESCO inscribed the ksar in 1987. Ouarzazate later grew as a regional administrative and film-production centre.
