The present city was planned in the eighteenth century under Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah as an Atlantic port linking Morocco with overseas trade. Its fortified medina combined Moroccan, European and Jewish influences. UNESCO recognises Essaouira as an exceptional example of a late-eighteenth-century fortified town.
