History and cultural context

Founded by the Almoravids in the eleventh century, Marrakech became a political, commercial and cultural centre linking the Sahara, Atlas Mountains and northern Morocco. Almohad, Saadian and Alaouite rulers expanded its mosques, palaces, gardens and ramparts. The medina and Jemaa el-Fna preserve living traditions of trade, storytelling, music and craftsmanship.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn usually offer the easiest balance for walking and day trips. Winter days can be mild, while summer sightseeing is best planned early and late.
