History and cultural context

Merzouga developed beside Erg Chebbi on routes used by nomadic Amazigh communities, traders and travellers between desert oases and northern markets. Nearby Rissani inherited the importance of ancient Sijilmasa, a major medieval trans-Saharan trading centre. Pastoral traditions, oasis agriculture, Gnawa heritage and desert hospitality remain part of local identity.

October to April offers the most comfortable daytime temperatures. Late spring can be warm, and summer requires heat-aware timing with activities near sunrise and sunset.

Desert days can be sunny while nights become much cooler, especially in winter. Pack closed shoes, sun protection, water, a warm layer and protection for cameras from sand.
