History and cultural context

Ouarzazate stands where routes from the High Atlas meet the Draa, Dades and desert valleys. The oasis region was shaped by Amazigh communities, fortified settlements and caravan movement. The modern town expanded during the French Protectorate as an administrative and military centre, while the Glaoui family’s Taourirt Kasbah reflects the political power once exercised along southern trade routes.

Nearby Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen ksar traditionally associated with the caravan road between ancient Sudan and Marrakech. Its clustered houses, towers, alleys, mosque and communal spaces represent southern Moroccan building traditions visible from at least the seventeenth century. UNESCO inscribed the ksar in 1987, and the region later became internationally known for film production.

Spring and autumn are ideal for walking and road travel. Winter mornings can be cold; summer visits are most comfortable early in the day.
